Does your garage door opener have all of the features that it could to make it as convenient and safe as possible? Do you know what features your garage door opener could have? Below, you will find three reasons that you need to invest in a ungraded garage door opener.

Enhanced Safety

If your garage door opener was manufactured before 1993, chances are, it doesn't have the safety features that the Consumer Product Safety Commission requires it to have. Before that date, garage door openers didn't have the sensors at the opening of the door that prevents the door from crushing anyone or anything that crosses the path of the door as it is closing.

If you don't know if you have that feature, or if it is working, head to your garage door and look at the bottom of the door tracks. You should see a small sensor on each side. Press the button to close the door and then put something in front of the sensor. If the door continues to close, the sensors aren't working. If you don't see the sensors, you don't have the feature at all. It's time to upgrade.

Improved Security

Remote devices can be used to easily hack older garage door openers. These small devices can be used to copy your remote signal as you press it. So, someone can be sitting just up the road from your driveway and when you press the button to open your garage door, they press the button on their device and copy the signal. Once that signal is copied, they can use their device at any time and gain access to your garage – your home if you have an attached garage.

Keypad Access

If you don't have an exterior keypad to open your garage door, you really don't know what you're missing. It is such a nice feature to be able to open your garage door without finding your remote or going inside to press the button. All you have to do is press a pin into the keypad and your garage door will open or close.

This feature is especially handy if you have workers coming into your home often. You can provide them with a code and after the work is done, you can change the code. You won't have to worry about whether they have made copies of the key to your home.
